From SAHM to creative to online entrepreneur
/I never thought about being a stay at home mom, but I was lucky to have the opportunity to be one. My husband and I were both working in hospitality and I knew I didn’t want tot continue working in a job where the guests always comes first (rightly so!) while I had children waiting for me at home. Don’t get me wrong - I love hotels and I love creating the most memorable events - but once I became a mom I couldn’t imagine how that could work for me. So I stayed at home to raise our three kids.
It wasn’t a walk in the park, but mostly I was very content taking care of the kids and everything that came with it. I had some time to develop creatively and started a freelance photography business. Even though I had good intentions and business experience, it never became a profitable business. Equipment is expensive, and so is the upkeep of it, and maybe I wasn’t completely in the right mindset, still dealing with diapers and baby schedules. I still enjoy it though, even more so now that we live in the beautiful city that is Kyoto, and I love creating memories for other families.
Next I focussed on shifting our family to a plant based and less-waste unit, and I started sharing that journey with the world through Instagram. I learned and got another diploma, and shared my knowledge with the world both online and in my community. I also started writing books and self published them, but we all know that unless you are a renowned writer whose books are turned into movies (hello, Nicholas Sparks), there is not much money in that either!

Of course, you will have to put in the work. No, you don’t need to be a sales person (hell, I know I left that corporate sales job running with tears streaming down my face and I would not want to do anything like that again), but you do need to put in some time and effort - at your own pace though, no one is pressuring you.
No, you don’t need to be an influencer, or have a huge following online. You can do this your way, mold it completely to fit you and the way you want to interact with people. If you want to become an Instagram boss though, the tools are there to help you become that.
Yes, there is an investment - but have you ever heard of someone making money without investing? A friend told me something true a little while ago, which she had heard in a podcast. I don’t remember which one or if I’m relaying the exact words, but it came down to this: there is the misconception that if you work hard in your job and safe money and be careful, you will become wealthy one day.
Newsflash: you won’t. No one working a regular job, with regular salary increases and promotions, will become financially free and abundant in the end. Because you still need to pay your rent or your mortgage, your insurance, and all the other things that happen in life. People who find financial freedom are the people who invest, who take a chance, who dare to leap forward and to trust. Trust that it will pay off.
This way of investing, in a company that has been around for a while, through recession and pandemics, is a very safe way to do it. And while you’re doing it, earning that investment back in no time at all, you are also investing in yourself: learning and taking time to become healthier, healing, growing. I know that as a mum, so much time goes to your family. Your children and providing for them are priority number one.
